About Hodder Barristers

Hodder Barristers is the continuation of the law practice of Gary Hodder, who has been practicing civil litigation in Toronto since his call to the bar in 1985. He is certified as a specialist in civil litigation by the Law Society of Upper Canada. Our essential staff is comprised of five lawyers and two law clerks.

Our offices occupy the top floor of Adelaide Place, located at 181 University Avenue and Adelaide Street in downtown Toronto.

We practice within Law Chambers, sharing the resources, facilities and talents of some 25 lawyers and other professionals.

Our firm provides plaintiff and defence litigation services to businesses and individuals. We can represent you as a defendant or plaintiff in most commercial disputes.

We have handled cases involving partnership and shareholder disputes, mediation, employment agreements, fraud and breach of contract cases among others.

We understand that legal disputes can be draining emotionally and financially. Therefore our goal is to provide cost-effective representation to resolve the dispute as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Our People
J. Gardner Hodder

J. Gardner Hodder was called to the Bar in 1985 after an earlier career as a journalist and graduate study in literature. He holds degrees from Harvard University, the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Toronto.

Mr. Hodder’s expertise is in Civil Litigation. In 1996, he was certified by the Law Society of Upper Canada as a Specialist in this area. Mr. Hodder has also written poetry, short stories and journalistic articles.

Recent settlements include:
– a million dollar wrongful dismissal of a senior executive.
– an accountant’s negligence claim.
– a multi-million dollar shareholders’ dispute.
– an $11 million breach of contract claim

In January of 1996 Mr. Hodder became the first lawyer in Ontario to win a class action trial under the Class Proceedings Act. He is also the founding president of the Toronto chapter of the International Network of Boutique Law Firms.

Yan Wang

Yan Wang joined Hodder Barristers as a junior associate after being called to the Ontario Bar in 2008. Yan received a Bachelor of Science from University of Western Ontario and a Master of Mathematics from University of Waterloo. In 2007, she obtained her Bachelor of Laws from University of Western Ontario with an area of concentration in Intellectual Property, Information and Technology Law.

Yan is fluently bilingual in English and Chinese. She has a wide, international, and cultured perspective on the world, with family roots in China and secondary education in Britain. In the summers of law school, Yan did her mini-pupilage with a prestigious Barrister Chambers in Lincoln’s Inn, England and an internship with a national firm in Beijing, China.

Yan is currently a member of Canadian Bar Association and Ontario Bar Association. She is also a member of Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers.

Elizabeth Roberts

Elizabeth Roberts is an associate with a broad-based civil and commercial litigation practice. Her practice includes contractual disputes, injunctive relief, professional negligence and employment disputes. Elizabeth has appeared before the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, Commercial List, Divisional Court and the Court of Appeal for Ontario.

Elizabeth obtained her Honours Bachelor of Arts degree with distinction from the University of Guelph in 2010. She then attended Osgoode Hall Law School, where she earned her Juris Doctor in 2013.

While at law school, Elizabeth worked as a research assistant and participated in the Parkdale Community Legal Services intensive program, as a student caseworker in the Landlord and Tenant Division. Elizabeth spent the summer after her first year studying abroad at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel.

Elizabeth joined Hodder Barristers as an articling student in 2013. She returned as an associate following her call to the bar in 2014.

Elizabeth is a member of the Canadian Bar Association, Ontario Bar Association and Women’s Law Association of Ontario.

Christopher Stienburg

Chris is an associate with a broad civil and commercial litigation practice. His practice includes shareholder disputes, contract disputes, personal injury claims, employment matters and estates matters. He has appeared before the Superior Court of Justice on dozens of occasions and has represented his clients at numerous mediations, discoveries and settlement conferences.

Chris obtained his Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in History from the University of Western Ontario in 2007 and a Master of Arts degree in International Affairs from Carleton University in 2009. He then obtained his Juris Doctor from the Osgoode Hall Law School in 2013. He was called to the bar in 2014.

While at law school, Chris was a research assistant to two professors. He was also on the editorial board of the German Law Journal, a highly-regarded English-language academic journal with a focus on comparative and international law.

Prior to joining Hodder Barristers, Chris practiced at a boutique firm specializing in personal injury litigation. He completed his articles at a mid-sized full-service firm, where he worked extensively in civil and commercial litigation.

Chris lives with his lovely wife, Kate, and their rambunctious dog, Vigo (a name to which he occasionally answers).

Yixin Wang

Yixin joined Hodder Barristers as an associate in 2016, after completing his articling placement with the firm. He practices primarily in civil litigation with an emphasis on commercial disputes, shareholder disputes and employment matters. He also has experience in dealing with academic misconduct. He has appeared before the Small Claims Court, Superior Court of Justice, and Commercial List.

Yixin received his Honours degree in finance cum laude from York University in 2012. He then received his Juris Doctor degree from Queen’s University in 2015. He was called to the Ontario bar in 2016.

Yixin is fluent in English and Mandarin. Being born in China and raised in Canada, Yixin is particularly attentive to communication issues arising from cultural differences and language barriers.

Yixin is a member of the Canadian Bar Association and Ontario Bar Association.
